Description
In the same year as the inauguration of the world-famous Bavaria statue on the Theresienhöhe in Munich, her twenty centimetre tall porcelain sister emerged from the kiln of the master workshops in Nymphenburg. Ludwig Michael von Schwanthaler, one of the principal masters of classical sculpture in Southern Germany, was responsible for the elaboration of both designs. He consciously dressed the secular patron saint of Bavaria in Germanic fashion - in a simple draped dress and bearskin with a raised wreath of oak leaves in her left hand.
