Nick Knight
British photographer Nick Knight is known for continually pushing the technical and creative boundaries of fashion photography. His work challenges conventional notions of beauty and idealised images, engaging with themes such as racism, disability, ageing, body image and society’s perception of marginalised groups. Knight gained international recognition in 1993 with his cover shoot of Linda Evangelista for British Vogue. His photographs have appeared in publications including Dazed & Confused, W Magazine and AnOther Magazine. He has also directed music videos, among them Björk’s Pagan Poetry and Lady Gaga’s Born This Way. With SHOWstudio.com, Knight founded a multimedia platform where, together with leading international creatives, he explores new ways of representing fashion.
For Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg, Nick Knight translated a portrait of British model Kate Moss into the three-dimensional medium of porcelain for the first time. Created in the manufactory’s master workshops in 2014, the figure in white biscuit porcelain draws on motifs from Christian iconography: a delicate crown of thorns and voluminous loincloth introduce sacred references, while expansive wings heighten the figure’s angelic, transcendent presence. In this way, the limited art edition draws on Nymphenburg’s long tradition of sacred imagery while at the same time resisting any single, definitive interpretation. Knight presents Kate Moss as a contemporary icon of almost otherworldly, timeless beauty.
