Fabulous summer nights

MAGIC SUMMER

Girls in swimsuits and boys in football shirts run past the fountain after a long summer’s day, dipping their feet into the water one last time with a giggle. Someone is having a candlelit picnic on the hot stones there. Little by little, the windows of the surrounding flats are opened; the sounds of jazz and the murmur of voices drift out, and a cat sets off on its nightly hunt, tiptoeing softly. It’s summer in the city; life takes place outdoors and, because of the heat, shifts to the evening hours. These are magical nights when old and new loves can find one another, miracles seem just a cherry stone’s throw away, and the rhythm of life slows to a shuffle. Carpe noctem!

FABULOUS
How many stories are told on these summer nights? Or begin? A thousand and one, as in the collection of the same name? These fairy tales feature numerous jinn, spirits of smokeless fire: they help adventurers through trials, guard treasures or kidnap princesses. Nigin Beck drew inspiration from these oriental, invisible beings and brought them to life in majolica. At the porcelain manufactory, this idea has given rise to four vases, which are now on display to mark the 80th anniversary of the ‘Haus am Waldsee’, a truly enchanting place in Berlin-Zehlendorf and an institution for contemporary art. Using the sgraffito technique, the German-Iranian artist has etched scenes into the material that are reminiscent of Heinrich Hoffmann’s Struwwelpeter, yet tell a second, less comical story. Incidentally, all the other Majolika objects from the manufactory also harbour a spirit: it is the genie of excellence and vibrant colours.

You can discover the pieces at Berlin’s Haus am Waldsee until 27th of September as part of the group exhibition ‘Wo ich wohne’ (Where I Live).

FANTASTIC
What Ruth Gurvich has created with the Lightscape series borders on magic. Her vision – working alongside the artisans at the manufactory to translate objects made of handmade paper, complete with their folds and creases, into porcelain – has made the Argentine designer’s collection a source of fascination for the past 17 years. Now there is a new addition to this extraordinary family: a Vide-Poche, bisque-coloured on the outside and glazed on the inside. It’s perfect for storing keys and loose change, providing a temporary home for jewellery or a lipstick, or serving chocolates or petit fours. This tray finds its purpose all by itself – or as if by magic.

PHENOMENAL
The dormouse is, on the one hand, a cute little creature, and on the other, a day with liturgical origins that has since come to be used as a weather forecast. “Whatever the weather is like on Siebenschläfer, that’s how it will be for the next seven weeks,” goes the old saying for yesterday, 27th of June. According to the German Weather Service, the accuracy rate is almost 70 per cent – so it’s highly likely to stay hot. The only thing to do is to channel your inner sultan, stretch out on the divan and drink mint tea. Taken in small sips, the warm tea cools the body and dilates the blood vessels, making the heat much more bearable. The recipe: Pour hot water over a bunch of fresh Nana mint, along with a tablespoon of green tea and sugar to taste, and leave to steep in the teapot for four minutes. Skip the showy pour into the cup from a great height – that’ll just make beads of sweat form on your forehead unnecessarily.
