Zerbinetta is the face of the new Bavarian Art Award
Bavarian Minister of the Arts Markus Blume presented the prize sculpture of the new Bavarian Art Award during a visit to the Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg: Zerbinetta, one of the main characters from Richard Strauss’ opera Ariadne auf Naxos.
The figure originates from the famous “Commedia dell’arte” series, which sculptor Franz Anton Bustelli designed for Nymphenburg in 1760. His works are among the most important creations of European Rococo sculpture and continue to shape the identity of the manufactory to this day.
With her lively posture and delicate character portrayal, Zerbinetta embodies qualities that also characterize the arts in Bavaria—lightness, wit, and the freedom to forge one’s own path.
“Zerbinetta is clever, witty, and a bit unpredictable—traits that make her a brilliant ambassador of Bavarian creativity,” said Arts Minister Markus Blume during his visit.
Each figure is handcrafted and hand-painted at the Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg using traditional techniques. This makes every piece a unique artwork—shaped from the finest Nymphenburg porcelain and backed by over 270 years of craftsmanship.
“The Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg stands for precision, style, and the highest artistic skill. With the figure of Zerbinetta, tradition and contemporary culture come together in a special way,” Blume added.
The Bavarian Art Award was presented on 18 November 2025 at the Bergson Kunstkraftwerk Munich. The award honors the diversity of the Bavarian art scene and is presented in eight categories. The Zerbinetta porcelain figure serves as the award statue, symbolizing the connection between artistic inspiration and masterful craftsmanship.
