Prince Regent Luitpold
Due to illness, King Otto, the younger brother of Ludwig II, was unable to rule. For this reason, Prince Regent Luitpold, brother of Max II Joseph, took over government at the age of 65. Luitpold, who had a long military career behind him, knew how to win the support of his subjects through modesty, efficiency and popularity. Although many mourned the unworldly King Ludwig II, the 25 years of Max II Joseph's reign turned into a golden age for Bavaria. Thanks to his reverance for painting, a fertile period began for the visual arts in Munich. In 1903 he introduced the opportunity for higher education for women. During his reign, the Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg was leased to the Bäuml family in 1888.
